Years ago, a young 5 year old boy received a gift. His father, a career merchant seaman, would bring him presents from the far reaches of the world on the occasions he was able to return home. On this particular day, he was handed a cheap Brazilian guitar. Neither would know the influence this exchange would have on the rest of the young man’s life. Not simply born was a love of music, but a window opened through which he would watch the world in a different way. He was sensitive, sometimes cross in his young life, many times empathetic as the years wore on, but always a student observing the strengths and weaknesses of society. His Irish mother was the guidepost in his life and over time he saw many of her traits in himself….dedication, loyalty, self- reliance and an inner strength that he would rely on more times than expected. She also taught him a deep love of history which he realized was more than just facts, but an engraved view into the human soul and behaviour. Through it all, the one constant was his music, that friend that would never leave and was always patient with his state of mind. Always surprising and always teaching, revealing new places, feelings, and roads never traveled.
